Help us give children a safe place to call home
Lukhanyiso Safe House
Registered NPO (Registration Number 082-490-NPO)
LUKHANYISO, means to bring light back into the broken hearted.
The Lukhanyiso Safe House started firstly as a simple soup kitchen, feeding 50 hungry children a day. Most of them had alcoholic or drug addict parents, and there was never enough food in the house, especially over weekends. (Ella knew just how these children felt, as she grew up under the same circumstances). For this reason, she wanted to feed children from her home. Soon there were 13 children sleeping over.
Ella and Penny then formed an official Safe House to provide protection for vulnerable children who came from disfunctional and abusive homes.
Ella had a powerful vision to provide these children with a home, education, food, clothes and mostly love, that they could grow up with confidence, be educated, learn a career and move on to become responsible adults, able to support themselves.
Lukhanyiso Safe House was formed 16 years ago, and is a place of refuge, where children can live out of danger.
The Lukhanyiso Safe House Journey
Many people asked how they could help, and through the kindness of generous supporters this dream began to grow. Angie and Woody, Emzini Tours and other donors helped us kick-start the project and supported the building of our very first Safe House.
Later, we purchased a small RDP house, which donors helped us renovate into a safe and welcoming home. The Khyamandi Foundation from Augusta, Georgia in the USA also assisted us in extending the house so that we could accommodate the children more comfortably.
Today, the Safe House is home to 16 children who rely on us for shelter, care, education and stability. Beyond the home itself, when necessary, we help other vulnerable children in the community with food, clothing, and counselling. The Safe House is cared for by Ella, her daughter Lamla, and two dedicated staff members who look after the children and ensure they grow up in a safe, nurturing environment.
